Computers in Libraries conference
* “We spend a lot of time trying to change people. The thing to do is to change the environment and people will change themselves.”
o 今日的一份名为“Designing Spaces for Effective Learning:A guide to 21st century learning space design”的报告中的一句话,这是一份很精美的pdf,有大量的例证和图式,真正帮助你构建一个21世纪的学习中心(呵呵,连泥瓦工、厨师等培训的都有呢)。
第一天的主题发言是searchenginewatch.com.
Some interesting things from Chris’ presentation:
我没有认识到Ask(正式的称呼是AskJeeves,很显然,Jeeves已经退休了)有多好过。 I didn’t realize that Ask (formerly ‘AskJeeves’: Evidently, ‘Jeeves’ has retired) was so good. In Chris’ opinion it is a better search engine than Google and MSN Search. The natural language queries work way better now than they did with AskJeeves. There is a customizable toolbox feature. They also have a Zoom feature where you can preview web sites before visiting them.
Ask has a maps feature that works in a similar fashion to Google maps, although the directions that it gives are much better than Google’s. A handly feature is the ability to choose between ‘driving’ directions and ‘walking directions’
Google不再是曾经那个专注于(the laser-like focus on)搜索的公司了,他们拓展了许多新的服务,比如Google reader、Google video、播客搜索、Google base(一个于ebay竞争的东西)。Google is no longer the ‘laser-like focus on searching’ company that it once was - they are expanding into many many new services, such as Google reader, Google video, a blog search and Google Base, which is a competitor to ebay.
MSN Search on the other hand is spending a lot of money to compete with the other players. One of their new features is SRC (search result clustering). People familiar with the old NorthernLight search engine will find the SRC feature similar to NorthernLight’s search folders.
(Day 1@CIL2006: Wikis In Action)
Some key points from the session:
Many of the presenters emphasized the importance of training as not only a means to promote the wiki but to also help ease users in to the new culture
The group from Binghamtom mentioned the importance of creating online help files. Most wiki software comes with help files, but modifying the help files to suit your own needs gives for more control. As well, creating the help software is a good way to learn the software for yourself.
Some lessons learned from wiki training:
Be aware of information overload - keep training basic
Hands-on learning is better, but does take more time
Start with content already on the wiki and seek further suggestions
Sandboxes are important features for users to test out wikis
The HSC 图书馆从各种各样的wiki软件中选择了Twiki(他们很幸运因为他们用的是Linux/Apache服务器,而Twiki在这上面运行比在 windows上更适合)The HSC Library chose Twiki from among the various types of wiki software. (Fortunately for them, they were using a Linux/Apache server, which is a little more favourable for Twiki than Windows)
Chad Boeninger talked about changing over traditional research guides (or subject guides/pathfinders) with wikis. Among the difficulties of traditional research guides:
Redundancy of resources
Multiple edits of the same content
No way to measure use or success
Timely updates are difficult
Wikis make excellent teaching tools; replace class handouts; can provide a broader scope than class-specific handouts.
Wiki strengths as research guides:
* 它们能拓展图书馆员的接触范围They can extend the reach of librarian
* 它们能成为一个起点They can promote sources
* 它们教授不少研究的技巧They teach research skills
* 它们在添加编辑内容上的方便性使得图书馆员的工作更加便利They make the job of the librarian easier because it is easier to add / edit content
* 它们使得更加丰富的信息、知识更容易地获取They make information and knowledge more accessible with more timely content
Wiki use ideas:
